...dry conditions cause the oat plant to limit the production of green leafy material and to focus its available energy into developing the oat grain...

Whilst Quaker Oats is an international brand name, the operation at Forrestfield prides itself on being a West Australian company. The main reason for this is the unique quality of oats grown in Western Australia.

Western Australia’s grainbelt produces approximately 40% of Australia’s total grain production even though it experiences the lowest annual rainfall and shortest growing season of all the Australian grain producing States.

This low rainfall and limited growing season combines to create conditions that ensure that the quality of the grain especially Oats in very high.

The dry conditions cause the oat plant to limit the production of green leafy material and to focus its available energy into developing the oat grain. As a consequence, average grain protein levels are higher for West Australian oats than oats produced in all other Australian States.

The short growing season and lack of rain during the grain setting period also ensures that the oat grain is not stained and dark when harvested and the grain moisture content is low at around 9 to 11%. This ensures that the oat will kiln more effectively to promote the sought after nutty oat flavour and the finished product will maintain a clean, bright appearance.

Quaker Oats Australia Pty Ltd use specific Milling Variety oats which, when grown under Western Australian conditions, have a very plump grain that produces a larger flake, higher protein and soluble fibre levels, and a stronger oat flavour profile that enhances the taste that oat-eaters are seeking.
